Canyoning is a water sport that consists of descending into narrow gorges crossed by small streams, usually in well-flowing streams.
Unlike other water sports with which it is confused, it is possible to cross the river without using a raft or canoe.
The environment in which it takes place is by its nature a typical canyoning path: it takes place in deep gorges carved into the rock, generally characterized by a steep slope.
The obstacles therefore consist of waterfalls, rock jumps, slides, flooded corridors, ponds. The backward progression is therefore impossible, because the exit from the canyon takes place only at its end or in correspondence with exits, if any.
This activity, which usually takes place in a group, is not necessarily to be considered an extreme sport: there are in fact routes of varying difficulty, from simple initiation canyons to extreme winter routes.
